Ellyn Bache's first novel, Safe Passage, is about a family back home waiting to hear the fate of a son at the site of a terrorist bombing, was later made into a film starring Susan Sarandon and Sam Shepard. Since then, she has written six other novels for adults, including Riggs Park, which helped launch Harlequin's NEXT line of mainstream fiction in 2005, and Daughters of the Sea, which was a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Best Book of the Year Award nominee. With her late husband, Terry, she authored a teen novel, Takedown, under the pen name E.M.J. Benjamin -- a story about a high school wrestler with epilepsy that was a Foreword Magazine Best Book of the Year finalist. Ellyn has also written a nonfiction journal about sponsoring Vietnamese refugees, and one children's picture book, Daddy and the Pink Flash, which was illustrated by artist Carole Tornatore. Come to Whittaker Creek marina and enjoy the unique and beautiful playground called The Carolina Out Islands! They're located in Oriental, the Sailing Capital of North Carolina. From their docks you can charter a sailboat for a bareboat ride up the Neuse River, down the ICW to Beaufort and Morehead City or out into the Pamlico Sound. That's their front yard.

The Old Theater at the corner of Broad and Church Streets in Oriental first opened as a movie theater in 1945. It attracted patrons from throughout Pamlico County, many of them using the then-existent train service for their journey. Now it hosts plays, musicals and concerts.

The Salty Southeast Cruiser's Net is a great way for boaters to keep abreast of the changing tides along the ICW, Intra coastal Waterway (same thing, we know but not everyone does) and the shifting shoals of the Gulf Coast. It's an online gathering hole discussing the changes in water depths, and alterations of aids to navigation and channels are of paramount importance, info about new or changed marinas (and anchorages), a really good (or bad) restaurant convenient to dockside dining, or even a new shore side attraction convenient to cruisers, is also fair game.
